When we think of dysfunctional sports franchises, a few teams come to mind.
The Cleveland Browns:
- Last Championship, 1964.
- Last Division title, 1989.
- Last playoff appearance, 2002.
The Seattle Mariners:
- They have never won the AL Pennant or played in the World Series
- Since 1977 they have won only 3 division titles, 1995, 1997 and 2001.
- Last playoff appearance 2001.
- In 2008, They became the first team in MLB history to lose 100 games with a $100 million payroll.
As bad as these organizations have been, none compare to the incompetence of the New York Knicks under owner, James Dolan.
In 1999, Dolan was given an increased role in managing Cablevision’s sports properties and is now the primary manager of these assets. The teams under his domain include the National Basketball Association’s New York Knicks, the National Hockey League’s, New York Rangers. Under his watch the Knicks have been the laughing stock of the NBA.
In 16 years, the Knicks have had a revolving coaching carousel. With Jeff Hornacek getting fired, the Knicks will be on their 13 coach since 2000.
Jeff Van Gundy 1996–2001.
Don Chaney 2001–2004.
Herb Williams 2004.
Lenny Wilkens 2004–2005.
Herb Williams 2005.
Larry Brown 2005–2006.
Isiah Thomas 2006–2008.
Mike D’Antoni 2008–2012.
Mike Woodson 2012–2014.
Derek Fisher 2014–2016.
Kurt Rambis 2016.
Jeff Hornacek 2016–2018.
In 16 years the Knicks have had 4 winning seasons. They haven’t gotten passed the 2nd round of the playoffs, and their record over the past four years.
What makes the losing so hard to take for New York fans, is that the Knicks still make money than any other team. According to Forbes Magazine, the Knicks are the most profitable team in the NBA. They are worth 3.6 billion and they generate 326 million in revenue. LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers have been to three straight NBA Finals and they are ranked 15th on the list. The Cavs are worth 1.3 Billion and generate $280 million in revenue. Knicks fans, it is time to ask for a refund, you aren’t getting your money’s worth. Fans are paying for a product that sucks.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. This epitomizes the Knicks. The way to build a team for long term success in the NBA is through the draft. Teams like Golden State, Cleveland, Oklahoma City have done a tremendous job drafting quality players and letting them grow and develop on the court. The Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks have great futures ahead of them because they utilized the draft. This is something Dolan doesn’t do. The Knicks have traded away draft picks for aging veterans on the downside of their careers. Since 2000, The Knicks have only drafted two players that have went on to become All-Stars on New York’s roster. David Lee and Kristaps Porzingis.
Madison Square Garden used to be called the “Mecca of Basketball” It is now the place players and coaches go to be overpaid and underachieve. Former NBA Commissioner David Stern criticized Dolan’s management of the Knicks, saying “They’re not a model of intelligent management.
Stern was being nice, The Knicks are the worst organization in sports. New York deserves a hell of a lot better.
