The New York Mets have a record of 39-55. They are in last place and have zero chance of making the playoffs. There are several “talking head” around baseball and in New York City who are suggesting that the Mets should trade their two star pitchers, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. I will respond with a simple picture, before I pull all my hair out because of this suggestion.
The Mets are ranked 28th in runs scored, and 29th in batting average (.229). The NYM need to take a page out of their cross town rivals playbook. A few years ago the Yankees traded away veteran players like Carlos Beltran and released, Alex Rodriguez. The Conventional wisdom when a team is struggling, is to trade older players, not pitchers on the rise.
deGrom is 5-4 with a 1.94 ERA and has 149 strikeouts in 123 innings pitched. He is 30 years old is considered to be one of if not the best pitchers in baseball.
Syndergaard is 5-1 with a 2.97 ERA and has 79 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched. He is 25 years old and is coming off an injury. When healthy he is one of the best pitchers in baseball.
New York needs to trade veteran players like Todd Frazier who is batting .217
Yoenis Cespedes who hasn’t been healthy in 2 years and Jay Bruce who is batting .212.
The Mets front office has been incompetent for decades. They are still paying Bobby Bonilla (every July 1st until 2035). They pay him $1,193,248.20.
David Wright will make $20 million this season, $18 in 2019 and $12 in 2020.
I understand the frustration Mets fans have… But trading two pitchers who can both be dominant on the mound for the next 5 years, is just as stupid as paying Wright.
