The Knicks and Jets Keep Failing

The New York Jets have not won a Super Bowl since 1969. The New York Knicks have not won an NBA Championship since 1973. In a city that loves champions…

The Knicks and Jets cannot get it right.

James Dolan took over control of the Knicks, the Rangers and Madison Square Garden in 1999.

Since 2000:

  • The Knicks hired 13 head coaches.
  • Have 1 playoff series win.
  • The franchise has not had a winning record since 2012-13.
  • They have not signed a first-round pick to a second contract since Charlie Ward.
  • The last time the Knicks reached the Conference Finals was in 2001.

Dolan has now hired Tom Thibodeau. He gave the former Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves coach, a 5-year contract. Why the 5 years? Thibodeau was not exactly in demand. He is a defensive minded coach in an offensive league. He is the Rex Ryan of the NBA. He only knows one side of the ball. This is a terrible hire. Players don’t like his “in your face” approach and his coaching style is straight out of the 1980’s. He will not last 3 years in New York.

After months of brewing tension, between the New York Jets and All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, the Jets traded the disgruntled star defensive back and a 2022 fourth round-pick to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for safety Bradley McDougald, a first-round and third-round pick in 2021, and a 2022 first-round pick. On paper this would appear to be a good trade for the Jets. But, looks can be deceiving. Are we supposed to think that the Jets brass is smarter than Pete Carroll and the Seahawks? Carroll has made the playoffs 8 out of the last 10 years, including two Super Bowl appearances and won the Super Bowl in 2013.  The Jets have not made the post-season since 2010. The draft picks that New York acquired from Seattle will not mean anything because the Jets and Knicks constantly trade their young talent. Jamal Adams and Kristaps Porzingis are two prime examples.

Both organizations in New York have failed for decades. As long as Dolan and Woody Johnson own these two franchises, they will continue to fail year after year, decade after decade. “The Big Apple” deserves better.
