The best high school football players usually come from a handful of states.
These states usually produce the best “Blue-Chip” prospects.
- New Jersey
I never understood why Rutgers University, located in New Brunswick New Jersey, was never an elite football program. If they just kept in their “in-state” talent, they would be ranked in the top 20 every year.
Iowa is not known for elite high school football players. That has not affected Iowa Head Coach, Kirk Ferentz.
The Hawkeyes leader has been coaching his team since 1999. His first two seasons, he compiled a record of 1-10 and 3-9. Since that time, he has had 2 losing records in in 19 years. Ferentz is doing this without great recruiting classes. He is beating teams like Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State who have far superior talent. over the past three years, Iowa is 3-0 in bowl games.
Iowa had 5 players drafted in 2020:
- Tristan Wirfs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- A. J. Epenesa, Buffalo Bills.
- Michael Ojemudia, Denver Broncos.
- Geno Stone, Baltimore Ravens.
- Nate Stanley, Minnesota Vikings.
Over the past 20 years, 68 Iowa football players have been drafted by the NFL.
Ohio State is the class of the Big-10, but Iowa is not that far behind Michigan or Wisconsin. Ferentz has built a top 20 program and no one outside of Iowa knows how good this team is year in and year out.
He may not be the best coach in the country, but he deserves all the credit in the world for building a great program and sending high caliber players to the NFL.
