The University of Maryland officially tipped off their basketball season last Saturday with “Magic Maryland Madness”.  The men’s and women’s teams hope to keep building on the success of their first season in the Big Ten by creating more magic this year. Fans and students that entered the XFINITY Center were treated to a show by magician JP Wilson, as well as a very entertaining gymnastic performance by Gymkana.

Perhaps the real magic of the evening took place when everyone in attendance was introduced to this season’s basketball teams.  Former MD basketball standout and NBA first round pick Walt “The Wizard” Williams greeted fans and was the emcee. Many strongly believe Williams saved the program when he decided to stay at MD after the Terps were placed on NCAA probation.

Head coach Brenda Frese and the Lady Terps were introduced first.  Each player came out from behind the stage as their picture and stats appeared above the court.  The men were introduced next, and put on a little show for the crowd by either dunking or laying up a ball on the far court.  Two of the biggest ovations went out to freshman Diamond Stone and sophomore Melo Trimble.  Coach Mark Turgeon surprised many by showing up at center court when fans were prepared for him to make his entrance beside the stage.  A “sneak peak” of the season was also offered, as each team participated in a short scrimmage.

Expectations are really high in College Park this season.  Fans are excited and the coaches and players are ready to get to work.  The men will play one exhibition game before opening the regular season on November 13th at home against Mount St. Mary’s.  The women will play a pair of exhibition games before tipping off their season by hosting UMass Lowell on November 14th.  Click here to view complete rosters and full schedules of both teams.
