Georgetown Hoyas’ senior D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera has picked up some preseason honors in the last two days. Today, at the 2015 Big East Basketball Media Day at Madison Square Garden, Smith-Rivera was named to this year’s Preseason All-Big East First Team. He will be joined on the first team by Butler’s Kellen Dunham and Roosevelt Jones, Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacano and Xavier’s Jalen Reynolds. Providence’s Kris Dunn was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year for the conference.
Smith-Rivera was also one of 20 players selected yesterday to the watch list for the 2016 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. The award is given out to the top point guard in college basketball. The list of 20 will be cut to 10 in February, then down to five in March and the winner will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show on April 8, 2016. Smith-Rivera was not the only Big East player named to the list. Joining him is Kris Dunn, Ryan Arcidiacano and Villanova freshman Jalen Brunson. Last year’s award went to Utah point guard Delon Wright.
Smith-Rivera lead the Hoyas to a 22-11 overall record last season. The Hoyas defeated Eastern Washington 84-74 in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Utah 75-64. The guard averaged 16.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
The Hoyas will host Hoya Hoops Madness on campus this Friday and will open the 2015-2016 season against Radford at Verizon Center on November 14th.
