I decided to make the trip to Ashburn, Va. for Redskins’ Fan Day. Admission was free, but the team set up a lottery system for fans to enter for a chance to win tickets. Entry was originally scheduled to begin at 11:30am, but fans were allowed access at 11am.
This initially seemed like a move that was put in place to say thanks to fans that did not head to Richmond for training camp. Music was played as the crowd gathered to find good seats close to the practice fields. Team voice Larry Michael addressed and thanked fans for coming out to watch drills and to support the team.
Spectators were treated to performances by the Redskins Marching Band, as well as an introduction and a pair of performances by the team cheerleaders. There was also a very entertaining touchdown dance competition involving six fans randomly picked from the crowd.
Head Coach Jay Gruden also thanked fans for showing up and was very active and vocal during practice.
As a surprise to many, QB Robert Griffin III made his way to the field in pads and participated in all drills, including 11-on-11’s. His status was unknown due to a concussion that was suffered during Thursday’s preseason win against the Detroit Lions. A large applause came after RGIII ran for a touchdown and showed some of his speed as he raced to the endzone. The highlight of the day came when QB Kirk Cousins hit WR Jamison Crowder for a touchdown and celebrated by jumping on Jay Gruden’s back. Crowder was back in practice after missing some time.
Also back in practice was LT Trent Williams. Williams missed the Lions game on Thursday.
Players concluded practice by signing autographs and talking with fans.
Fans were encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to sit on. There were also food options available for purchase. Those looking to eat, had their choice of Buffalo Wild Wings, Famous Dave’s, Papa John’s and Subway.
This was the final open practice. The Redskins will take the short drive to Baltimore on Saturday night to face the Ravens in their third preseason game. As many know, the third preseason game normally has the starters playing the most out of the four (or five, if you are in the Hall of Fame game). Status for Griffin has not yet been determined, but if cleared for contact, it would seem likely that he will suit up and play
