Presenting My Case… Why LeBron James Is The Greatest of All-Time

Opening Arguments:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Hello, my name Monte Perez, I am the Sports Whisperer, and I thank you for being here today. So, I am back in the PRETEND courtroom, defending my PRETEND client, LeBron James.

I almost feel guilty being here because by the time we are done, you will see beyond a reasonable doubt, that James is the greatest NBA player of all-time. Now the prosecution, aka “The Haters” are going to come up with everything they have. They are going to throw the kitchen sink at me, trying to stump yours truly. They are going to use past NBA players, they are going to use stats and other arguments. On the surface, when you first hear these outlandish statements you will give them some thought, they may even sound reasonable. But, don’t be fooled, the case they are making has no validity. The case they are making is playing right into my defense. I am going to pick their feeble arguments apart one by one, the way LeBron picks apart defenses on the court. (Their arguments will be in bold face below) When you read the last paragraph of this article, you will come to the conclusion that is obvious. It is what you already know but don’t want to admit it because the public won’t let you. Despite all “The Haters” LeBron James is the greatest player we have ever seen on the basketball court. Thank you in advance.

The Haters:  Michael Jordan won 6 titles, until LeBron wins 6 rings he can’t be considered the greatest of all-time.

The Sports Whisperer: “Remember the cereal commercial that had the phrase,”Silly rabbit Trix are for kids”? I almost feel embarrassed for the argument listed above. You see, it is the most common argument used when comparing LeBron to other great players. But, it is the dumbest statement ever made. “The Haters” are playing right into my hands. If the argument they are using for greatest player of all-time is just championships, Jordan can’t be the G.O.A.T. There are 9 players with more rings than Jordan. Including Robert Horry who won 7 titles. By using this argument, the prosecution, is saying that Horry was a better player than Charles Barkley because he has 7 more championships. With all due respect judge, if this is their first argument we need to end this trial right now, because they aren’t prepared for me. I suggest they come back a few months from now when they have gotten more research.

The Haters/Prosecution: Objection your honor.

The Sports Whisperer: Get used to objecting. To quote Al Pacino in the 1992 movie, “Scent of a Woman” I’m just getting warmed up.

The Haters/Prosecution: Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird never had to leave a team to win a ring. LeBron bought a title in Miami.

The Sports Whisperer: I really have to laugh at this statement because once again there is no validity to it. Magic Johnson played with Hall of Famers like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy. He had one of the greatest coaches of all-time in Pat Riley. There was no reason for Magic to ever leave LA. Larry Bird had hall of famers as well. Coach Bill Fitch was voted in 1996 as one of the 10 greatest coaches of all-time. As a player K.C. Jones won 8 titles, as an assistant he won 2 and as a head coach he led the Celtics to two championships in 1984 and 1986. Bird played with Hall of famers, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Bill Walton. Guards Dennis Johnson, Tiny Archibald and Danny Ainge. There was no reason for the man they called, “Larry Legend” to ever leave Boston. Jordan played for Phil Jackson a man who has coached his teams to 11 titles, he played with Hall of Famers Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. Up until Dirk Dirk Nowitzki arrived in the NBA, Toni Kukoc was considered one of the best European players ever. He won sixth man of the year in 1996. Jordan never had to leave because like Magic and Bird he was surrounded by legendary players and coaches.

The man they call “King James” Has been to 8 NBA finals with 4 different coaches. Mike Brown has been fired three times since LeBron left Cleveland.  Before “The Chosen One” took his talents to South Beach, head coach Erik Spoelstra had never made it past the second round of the playoffs. With LeBron, Spo went to 4 straight finals and won two rings. Since LeBron left, The Heat have missed the playoffs two out of the last three years. David Blatt coached a little over a year and half before he was fired in Cleveland. He is now out of the country, coaching overseas. Tyronn Lue had no head coaching experience and he has been to two straight finals, in part because of #23.

In 2007, LeBron took a bunch of “stiffs” to the NBA Finals only to get swept by the San Antonio Spurs. That team had no one on their roster who had a career average of more than 15 points per game. Larry Hughes was the #2 option that year and he finished his career averaging 14.1 points per game. This team was carried by LeBron and Cleveland didn’t put any legitimate pieces around him. LeBron had to leave Cleveland and 4 straight finals appearances in Miami, proved he made the right decision.

The Haters/Prosecution: LeBron James is nowhere near the scorer of Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson or Larry Bird. Those guys were assassins and killers on the court.

There is a long pause…

The Judge: Mr. Sports Whisperer, are you going have a rebuttal for this claim made by the prosecution?

The Sports Whisperer: I am sorry you honor I am so bored with this I feel like we should just go home now, but if you want my retort here it is.

There is no doubt the Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain are the greatest scorers of all-time Jordan is 1st on the list, he averaged 30.12 points per game, Wilt is second, averaging 30.07. But LeBron is 5th All-time in scoring average 27.13. He is ahead of  phenomenal scorers like Jerry West ( The Logo of the NBA) and  Allen Iverson. Kobe Bryant is 12th on the scoring list (24.99 points per game). LeBron shot a higher percentage and took less shots per game than Kobe. So, don’t tell me Kobe is a better scorer than LeBron… he isn’t. How can anyone say LeBron is not a scorer when he is 5th in points per game in the history of the NBA and his career shooting average is 50.1% .Compare that to Kobe’s 44% and Iverson’s 42%. LeBron is a better and more efficient scorer.

The Haters/Prosecution: LeBron doesn’t elevate his game in the Finals like Jordan or Kobe.

The Sports Whisperer: In 7 out of 8 Finals Appearances LeBron has led his team in scoring. The Golden State Warriors have the greatest record over the past 3 seasons in the history of the NBA. One could argue, that they are the greatest team ever. In two out of the three finals, LeBron led both teams in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks. Both Teams! That is more dominance than Kobe, Magic, Jordan and Bird.

Closing argument:

As you can clearly see from the statements I made above, LeBron James is the most complete basketball player we have ever seen. He has done more with less coaching that any Hall of Fame Player. LeBron wins because of his scoring and ability to make players around him better. He is a scorer despite the popular commentary that is out there and he is one of the greatest distributors of all-time. What makes him so unique is he does everything on the court with precision and accuracy. In 14 years in the league he has never played in less than 62 games and when the playoffs come, he is always healthy. He can guard all five positions during a game. His career average is 27.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7 assists per game. He does this despite every team game planning to stop him but  Like Dan Patrick used to say on ESPN…”You can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him.” Even if he never wins a ring again LeBron is the G.O.A.T… I rest my case.
