Hall of Fame basketball player, Larry Bird in an interview, told Reggie Miller that he really did tell his competitors that they were fighting for second place in the 1988 three-point shooting contest. After he said this, Bird went out on won the competition. The former Boston Celtics small forward was known for his trash talking and he backed it up. Alabama coach, Nick Saban, doesn’t talk trash. He barely talks to reporters. But, his message is loud and clear. Everyone in college football is playing for 2nd place.
Alabama is 8-0. This is the best offense Saban has ever had and it may be the best offense in the history of college football. They are averaging 54.1 points per game and have outscored their opponents 433 to 127. The have scored a touchdown on every opening possession to start the game. Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t thrown a pass or played in the 4th quarter because the Crimson Tide are so far ahead in the 2nd half. If he played all four quarters, Alabama would score 77 points per contest. He is breaking almost every NCAA Record.
- Tua has a 17.1% Touchdown percentage. Seth Russell of Baylor set the record in 2015. Russell’s TD % was 14.5.
- Tua is averaging 20 yards per completion. Danny Wuerffel of Florida set the record in 1996. Wuerffel averaged 17.5 yards per pass.
- Tua is averaging 14.3 yards per attempt. Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma set the record in 2017. Mayfield averaged 11.5 yards per attempt.
The best way to beat Alabama is to keep thier powerful offense off the field. You must have a dominant offensive line, a quarterback who can run and throw and a defense that can slow them down. The only two teams that have a shot at doing this are the Oklahoma Sooners and the Clemson Tigers. Oklahoma has the offensive but not the defense. Clemson has an outside shot to dethrone the champions. Dabo Swinney has faced Saban three straight years in the Final Four Playoffs. Clemson won the National Championship three years ago, with quarterback Deshaun Watson, 35-31. The Tigers have one of the best front 4 defensive line in college football and their offense is getting better every week.
It is going to be a monumental task for any team to beat “Bama.”
