The 13-3, LA Rams will travel to New Orleans to take on the 13-3, Saints for the NFC Championship. The Saints are a 3.5 point favorite and the game will be Sunday, 3:00 PM on Fox TV. This is a rematch. In week 9, the Saints defeated the Rams 45-35. It was the 7th highest scoring game this year.
The Rams dominated the Dallas Cowboys in the division round. The Rams racked up 273 rushing yards and held the ball for over 36 minutes. LA physically manhandled Dallas on both sides of the ball. C.J Anderson rushed for 123 yards and Todd Gurley accumulated 115 yards. Jared Goff “managed the game” completing 15 of 28 passes for 186 yards. The defense held Ezekiel Elliott to 47 yards on 20 carries. After losing 2 in a row, the Rams have now won 3 straight games.
New Orleans Saints:
The Saints won a hard fought battle against the Philadelphia Eagles, 20-14. This game was not pretty, but the motto was “survive and advance.” New Orleans was down 14-0 in the 1st quarter and held the Super Bowl Champions scoreless for the remaining 3 quarters. The Saints are now 6-0 in home playoff games under Drew Brees. The Former Purdue Boilermaker threw for 301 yards, two touchdown passes and Michael Thomas had 12 catches for 171 yards with and caught a touchdown pass.
Over the past month of the season the LA Rams have changed their identity. They are now using the running game to set up the play action pass. Goff threw 50% of his passes out of play action against the Dallas Cowboys. The Rams have gotten better the last month of the season where the Saints peaked a few weeks ago. Most media experts say Sean Peyton is a great “Game-Caller.” Against the Eagles, late in the game, on a 3rd and 2 he called a run play and lost 4 yards. He didn’t put it in the hands of his best player, Brees. Peyton has one of the most talented running backs in the history of the NFL. Yet, Alvin Kamara has only rushed for 100 yards once all season.
Sean McVay is a better play caller than Peyton and that will be exploited on Sunday. Wade Phillips will get the Rams defense to make enough plays. The Rams have the best talent on both sides of the ball of any team remaining in the playoffs.
