18 players and staff members on the Florida Marlins have tested positive for COVID-19. Over 35 NFL players have opted out of the 2020-21 season because of this pandemic.
7 New England Patriots will not play this year:
- Fullback Danny Vitale.
- Guard Najee Toran.
- Offensive lineman Marcus Cannon.
- Linebacker Dont’a Hightower.
- Running back Brandon Bolden.
- Safety Patrick Chung.
- Wide receiver Marqise Lee.
The Patriots will be playing with a ton of practice squad players, rookies, and 2nd and 3rd stringers? Is this what the NFL wants? a watered-down version of their sport?
Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson has tested positive.
Pederson had an unscheduled team meeting Sunday to share the news with his players. He told the team after receiving a second positive test result, confirming the diagnosis. Pederson is 52 years old.
- Kansas City Chiefs coach, Andy Reid is 62.
- Patriots coach, Bill Belichick is 68.
- Seattle Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll is 68.
COVID-19 is still in its first wave here in America. As of Sunday, August 2nd, 2020, there were over 4 million cases and 157,000 American souls gone. America has 4% of the world’s population but 25% of Corona Virus cases.
The NBA and NHL have appeared to find a way around players and coaches getting sick. The latest round of testing inside the NBA Orlando Campus shows more evidence that the NBA’s “bubble” plan seems to be working. On the eve of the NBA’s restart, the league announced that there have been zero new positive tests for Coronavirus among 344 players.
The hockey “bubble” is doing just as well. The NHL reported zero new coronavirus cases during its last week of training camp. From July 18 to Saturday, the league administered 4,256 tests to more than 800 players, with all tests coming back negative.
We are still learning what this virus can do and how we can slow it down to protect ourselves. The NFL should delay the start of training camp until October 1st and start the season after Halloween. With schools opening and no national plan for social distancing with kids, the outbreak will get worse before it gets better. Over the past decade, the NFL has implemented new rules to protect player’s health, including, concussion protocols. Now is the time to protect the players and coaches again. Without a bubble, no one on the sidelines is safe.
