March Madness… Who Gets To The Final Four?

What if I told you the greatest sports lie ever perpetrated on the American public….

I imagine that right now, you’re feeling a bit like Alice. Hmm? Tumbling down the rabbit hole?

The common theme for March Madness is that “The little guy” or “Cinderella” has a chance.

This is the lie…the greatest sports lie ever told.

Cinderella has zero, zilch and no shot in hell, of winning the NCAA Tournament.

A total of three No. 11 seeds have ever advanced out of their region to the final four: LSU in 1986, George Mason in 2006 and VCU in 2011. All three lost in the semifinal game. So when you do your bracket, if you have any team higher than a 10 seed going to the Final Four, you are throwing your money away.  But if you want to pick a few upsets in the first round, go with one or two 12 seeds vs the 5 seeds. Traditionally, that is a good upset pick.

Below is the Sports Whisperer’s breakdown of the NCAA Tournament.

The South:

Virginia is the #1 Seed and they have proven all year they can play with any team in the country. Their defense wears you down in the 2nd half and they are a very hard team to prepare for.

Teams to watch for:

#5 Kentucky, #4 Arizona and #2 Cincinnati.

Prediction: I am “Going Chalk” here (Picking the higher seeds). I like Virginia to come out of the south defeating Cincinnati in the Elite 8.

The West:

Xavier is the #1 Seed and if you don’t live in Ohio, and don’t follow college basketball, you have no idea how good they really are. But, with that said they have a very tough road to get to the Final Four.

Teams to watch for:

#5 Ohio State, #4 Gonzaga, #3 Michigan and #2 North Carolina.

Gonzaga could be the best coached team in the entire tournament and they have great chance to make a deep run. But, I am taking Michigan to get to the Final Four.

The East:

Villanova is the #1 Seed and they should have the easiest path to the Final Four.

Teams to watch for:

#5 West Virginia, #4 Wichita State, #2 Purdue.

The conventional wisdom here is take Villanova. But, I am going to go with a huge upset. I like West Virginia to beat Purdue in the Elite 8 and get to the Final Four. WV finished 24-10 and had one three game losing streak. They have been consistent all year long and Bob Huggins is primed to take his team far. This is a long shot, but, go with the Mountaineers.

Kansas is #1 seed, but, this is the hardest bracket to advance through.

Teams to watch for:

#3 Michigan State, #2 Duke

The entire basketball world loves Michigan State and rightly so, they have had a great season. But head coach Tom Izzo is 1-11 against Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. Take the Blue Devils to beat Kansas and Coach K gets to his 13 final four, which will be the most all-time.

Final Four Prediction:

#1 Virginia vs #3 Michigan

#5 West Virginia vs #2 Duke.
