Are We Looking At A Pennsylvania Super Bowl? Week 7 In The NFL Recap

In 1984, Wendy’s fast food restaurant, had a catch phrase called, “Where’s the Beef?” This week’s theme for the NFL is… “Where’s the offense?” 7 teams failed to score an offense touchdown, the most on a single day, since December of 2001.

The Sports Whisperer Presents… 5 Things We Learned about Week 7 in the NFL.

#5) Todd Bowles, What the hell were you thinking?

The New York Jets were tied with the Miami Dolphins 28-28 with 39 seconds left to play in the 4th quarter. Inside their own 20, the Jets Inexplicably called a pass play. Josh McCown threw an interception and the Dolphins kicked a game winning field goal and won the game 31-28. There was no point to throw the ball in that situation. Run the clock out and play for overtime. The Jets have now blown two 14 point leads over the past two weeks. Bowles is 18-21 as New York’s coach. It is time for him to go. And for all the Jets fans who thought the 38-year-old McCown was the answer, it is time to change the question. The Jets are 3-4 and the Dolphins are now 4-2.  Quarterback Matt Moore came off the bench for an injured Jay Cutler and threw for 188 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Dolphins are better with Moore under center.

#4) Just win Baby!

The Raiders outscored the Kansas City Chiefs 10 to 0 in the 4th quarter and won 31-30. Derek Carr was 29-52, for 417 yards and 3 touchdown passes. I had the Raiders winning this division in pre-season, and as long as Carr is healthy, they are the best team in the AFC West. During the second quarter of the game, Marshawn Lynch ran onto the field to get involved in a scrum that started after Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters was flagged for a late hit on Carr. Lynch bumped into line judge Julian Mapp and then appeared to push him, which resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and his ejection from the contest. The man they call “Skittles” was suspended for 1 game. This was immature, dumb and I think Lynch should have been suspended for a minimum of 3 games. You cannot run on the field and push an official. The players in the Raiders locker room love Lynch, but if he is their #1 leader, they will never win a super bowl.

#3) Are the Steelers the Best team in the AFC?

Two weeks ago, the Steelers lost at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-9. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 5 interceptions and questioned whether he still “had it.” Pittsburgh has now won 2 straight games, they are 5-2 and they have defeated every team in their division. Over the past two games “Big Ben” has played much better and Antonio Brown and Le’veon Bell are playing like MVP candidates. Their defense has been stepping up as well. Against the Chiefs and Bengals Pittsburgh gave up 13 and 14 points. This is a scary team that is starting to click on all cylinders and that is a very ominous thought for teams in the AFC.

#2) The Rams are a playoff team, and no one is talking about them.

LA was up 23-0 against the Arizona Cardinals at halftime and won 33-0. This was an impressive performance from start to finish. Todd Gurley combined for 154 yards and scored 1 touchdown. This Rams team is playing much better than most experts expected. They are now 5-2, it is their best start after 7 games, since 2003. LA should be the favorite to win the NFC West. Carson Palmer suffered a broken arm and should be out the remainder of the season. I would be shocked if Palmer doesn’t retire.

#1) Carson Wentz is the new face of the NFL?

In week 1 of The Full Monte Football show (Sunday mornings 11 AM Eastern) I announced to the world that other than Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, If I was taking a quarterback over the next 5 years, It would be  Wentz. In just 22 games as a starter, the former North Dakota State star is playing like one of the best QB’s in the NFL and right now he is the MVP. The Eagles are 6-1. On Monday night the defeated the Washington Redskins for the 2nd time in 7 weeks by the score of 34-24. Over the past three games Wentz has 11 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. On the season he is completing 61% of his passes, he has 17 TD passes, 4 interceptions and a QB rating of 104. I will write it again… If I am starting a team, Carson Wentz would be my number 1 choice out of every player in the NFL. Wentz is 6’5 230lbs, and he will get stronger and better every week and every year.

Bonus Coverage:

Do the Seahawks have their swag back? Seattle beat the Giants 24-7. Russell Wilson threw for over 300 yards and a 3 touchdown passes. The Giants won’t win 5 games this year. The question for Giants fans… Do you draft a QB to replace Eli Manning in next year’s draft?

The Broncos offense looks terrible. There is way too much talent at WR and at the Running back position for Denver to get shut out.

Mike Mularkey’s play calling is getting worse every week. The Titans have a very good quarterback in Marcus Mariota, a two-headed monster at running back in DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry and an All-Pro TE in Delanie Walker. The Titans couldn’t score a touchdown against the 0-7 Browns. The best thing for the Titans to do is fire Mularkey immediately. The job of a coach is to put the players in the best position to win. Mularkey’s offense is underachieving. The play calling is predictable and conservative.

Don’t look now but the Saints are 4-2.
