Kawhi Leonard …You Cannot Be Serious!

Tennis legend, John McEnroe got tremendous exposure when he yelled, “You Cannot be Serious!”

When I heard that Kawhi Leonard wanted to leave the San Antonio Spurs, I had the same reaction as McEnroe, You cannot be serious!

There are usually three reasons players leave an organization.

  • They want more money: The Spurs hope to meet with Leonard and his representatives soon and offer him a five-year $219 million super-max contract that he will be eligible to receive starting July 1st.
  • They are tired of losing: The Spurs have won 50 or more games 18 of the last 19 years. Gregg Popovich is the    best coach in the NBA. As long as he is on the sidelines, the Spurs have a chance to win a title every year.
  • They don’t like their role on the team: Kyrie Irving had money and a team that went to three straight NBA          Finals. Irving demanded a trade because he wanted to be the number 1 option and “go-to-guy.

Leonard has been the #1 option since the Spurs won their last title in 2014. He has “carte blanche” to do whatever he wants on offense. Actually, the Spurs coaching staff has yelled at him for not shooting enough.

As a former college basketball coach I couldn’t picture a better scenario for a player. No one on SA roster plays more than 32 minutes a game and Pop prolongs careers by not playing his guys every game throughout the season.

I have to repeat my opening statement. With all due respect to Kawhi Leonard… You cannot be serious!
