There is a line from the song Juicy by the Notorious B.I.G where he says, “And if you don’t know, now you know.” For all you Russell Wilson haters… That is for you. Before I was The Sports Whisperer, I wrote an article titled, “Why Wilson is a top 5 Quarterback in the NFL.” As in many of my predictions… that eventually come true…people thought I was crazy. I will write it and say it again, Russell Wilson is a top 5 quarterback in the NFL. Let us look, at what led me to this conclusion.
Wilson had more passing touchdowns than Andrew Luck in his first two seasons. (Wilson had 52, Luck had 46) Luck threw the ball 1,197 times, Wilson only threw the ball 800 times. We all agree that when healthy, Luck is considered an elite quarterback. These stats clearly show… Wilson is elite as well.
Wilson has been to back-to- back Super Bowls. Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Eli Manning and Aaron Rodgers haven’t done this in their great careers.
Wilson Ran for over 800 yards last season and averaged 7.2 yards per carry. In an Era where it is running back by committee… Marshawn Lynch gained 1,306 yards rushing and Wilson had 849 yards for a total of 2,155. Only the Cowboys, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans had more as a team. Wilson is a running back/quarterback. In all his rushing attempts last year, he didn’t lose a fumble once.
Over the past 5 Games Wilson has 1,420 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and no interceptions.
Wilson’s Stats this year: 68.8% completions, 3,538 passing yards, 489 rushing yards, 33 total touchdowns and only 7 interceptions.
For his career he has 112 total touchdowns 33 interceptions.
He has put up great numbers and hasn’t turned the ball over in the best defensive division in football.
The Biggest argument when it comes to Wilson being elite is that he plays on a great team. This is one of the most ridiculous statements ever made. Terry Bradshaw played on the greatest defensive team ever assembled. He had Hall of Fame wide receivers in Lynn Swann and John Stallworth and a Hall of Fame running back in Franco Harris. In Super Bowl IX and X Bradshaw threw the ball 14 and 19 times. This doesn’t diminish his greatness. Troy Aikman played for one of the greatest offensive lines in the history of the NFL. He had a top 5 wide receiver of all-time in Michael Irvin and arguable the greatest running back ever, in Emmitt Smith. Don’t punish Wilson because he has a good team around him. This season Seattle has lost Lynch and Jimmy Graham due to injuries. Wilson has thrived without them. Wilson used to be a piece of the puzzle, not anymore. Pete Carrol has taken off “the kid gloves” and this is now Wilson’s team.
Greatness recognizes greatness, Rapper Eminem even wrote lyrics about Wilson. “It’s payback, Russell Wilson falling way back in the draft…Turn nothing into something, still can make that, straw into gold.I will spin Rumpelstiltskin in a haystack
For all the “haters” who still think Wilson is a “System Quarterback” I will end with this.
Here is Pete Carroll’s record as an NFL head coach without RW as his starting QB.
6-10, 8-8, 10-6, 9, 7, 8-8, 7-9 and 7-9. Without RW he is 41-39.
Here is Carrol’s record with RW as his starter.
11-5, 13-3, 12-4 and 9-5. With RW he is 45-17 and has two Super Bowl Appearances.
Russell Wilson is not a system quarterback, he makes the system. Like all great rappers… I drop Mic and walk off stage.
