The week that was for this years Georgetown Hoyas, by now we are all along for this roller coaster ride of a season and last night was a fun moment. The Hoyas sit tied for 3rd in the Big East with St. Johns and bounced back nicely from a loss against Villanova this past Sunday. Owning the boards and the paint were big factors for the win. Before we go into the game versus Providence a quick recap of where we stand.
Hoyas 15-8 Overall (5-5 Big East)
Scoring: Jessie Govan 18.3 ppg followed by James Akinjo 14 ppg, and Mac McClung 13.2 ppg
Rebounds: Jessie Govan 8 per game, Josh LeBlanc 7.6 and Trey Mourning and Jamorko Pickett tied at 4.2
Assists: James Akinjo 5.3 per game, Mac McClung and Greg Malinowski almost 3 per game
Next Game vs Butler at Capital One Arena
Congrats to Jessie Govan hitting the 1,500 points club! After Sunday game no points, we all knew he would bounce back last night. This is the Hoyas first season sweep of the Friars since the 2011-12 season and without question the best player on the court last night. He has been a top 3 contender weekly for my favorite Hoya. Another double-double and while his shooting was way off 1 for 11 James Akinjo dished it out plenty and was solid from the free throw line.
Saturday it’s a battle against Butler and a chance for another series sweep. With all five starters in double figures positive things to carry into the next game. Pretty safe to say the Hoyas are on the outside looking in terms of March Madness, but a good run here and a strong showing in the Big East Tournament you never know. And for a program that is rebuilding an NIT appearance would not be the end of the world. As I’ve said all season we are all going through growing pains with this squad so we can’t get too high or too low, but improvement is there you can see it.
Can’t say enough about the freshmen class and how these kids are taking their lumps and come back hard every time. Time to defend our home court and beat a beatable Butler team, the season is still very much in play. Until next time #HoyaSaxa
