December 24th Bowl Predictions

By: Marcus “Mook” Washington

Another 1-1 day but the pain from losing the Georgia Southern-Bowling Green game will stay with me. I didn’t see that coming.

We load back up on Christmas Eve.

Popeyes Bahamas Bowl

Middle Tennessee (7-5, Conference USA) vs Western Michigan (7-5, MAC)

Middle Tennessee

Middle Tennessee ended the season on a red hot 4 game winning streak including scoring 40+ points in the last two. The bowl season has shown us the team whose offense is really rolling is the team that wins.  The Blue Raiders are led by a couple of guys in the passing game that most haven’t heard of. There’s Tight End Terry Pettis who ranks 6th nationally in yards per catch at 21.2 and freshman wide receiver Richie James is averaging 8.3 receptions a game this season as a freshman to which is 3rd nationally and ranks 1st among freshmen.

Western Michigan

Western Michigan was limping to the finish line when they saved their season with an upset over Toledo in their final game. It was their first win over a ranked opponent in the school’s history.

The Broncos are ranked second in the nation in time of possession and are led by junior receivers Corey Davis and Daniel Braverman. Each had over the 1,200 receiving yards this season, becoming the first duo in the country since 2010 to do so.

Prediction:  Middle Tennessee +5

This could easily be a one possession game and the line is just high enough to take the Blue Raiders even though, straight up I would take Western Michigan.

Hawai’I Bowl

San Diego St.(10-3, Mountain West) vs Cincinnati (7-5, AAC)

San Diego St.

The Aztecs are winners of their last 9 games, scoring over 30 or more points in six of them.

The Aztecs are 14th in the nation in rushing at 235.3 yards per game. RB Donnel Pumphrey  finished the season ranked 10th in rushing totaling 1,554 yards rushing, with 16 TDs.

The Bearcats aren’t nearly as hot at the Aztecs. They split their last 4 games including giving up 65 against South Florida.

Hayden Moore is scheduled to get the start with Gunner Kiel not making the trip for unspecified personal reasons. Moore started 2 games this season going 1-1, beating Miami (Fl) and losing to BYU.

Prediction: San Diego St. -3

I expect the Aztecs to run away with this one. They will pressure Hayden Moore and the running game will be wildly effective.
