Year 2020 will not end without a Canelo fight, which is direct result of Parting Ways with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN.
A limited number of fans will be present at The Alamodome in San Antonio as Alvarez makes his first appearance since splitting with Golden Boy Promotions.
The Alamodome – which has previously staged fights involving Julio Cesar Chavez, Evander Holyfield and Manny Pacquiao – is familiar territory for Alvarez.
“I have great memories of my previous bouts in Texas, and I expect this to be a special fight to close out the year.”
Canelo is a free agent and looks to be serving as his own promoter.
But there’s nothing stopping him from continuing to work with DAZN as a broadcast partner, or for that matter with Golden Boy Promotions in the future if they have someone he wants to fight.
Canelo is 53-1-2 with 36 TKOs and Smith 27-0 with 19 TKOs.
Callum Smith is still seen as the top dog in his division, despite a questionable decision win over John Ryder back in 2019, which was Smith’s last fight.
After seeing 2020 dominated by contract disputes, Canelo Alvarez will step into the ring before the end of the year.
Canelo made the official announcement, confirming that he will fighting Callum Smith on December 19 in a unification bout for the WBA super middleweight championship.
