Chiefs At Patriots: Sunday Night Preview

The 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs will travel to take on the 3-2 Patriots,Sunday Night on NBC TV. Kansas City has won 2 straight over New England.

The Chiefs:

Kansas City’s offense has been a thing of beauty over their first 5 games.

  • They are averaging 413 yards per game. Ranked 5th in the NFL.
  • They are scoring 35 points per game. Ranked  2nd in the NFL.
  • They are converted 45.3% on 3rd downs. Ranked 4th in the NFL.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has completed 63.6% of his passes, 14 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

The Chiefs have struggled all year on defense. They are ranked last in the NFL, giving up 461.8 yards per game.

The Patriots:

After starting the season 1-2, New England has now won 2 straight and scored 38 points in back-to-back weeks.

The Patriots are not breaking any records offensively. They are ranked 22nd in yards per game and 21st in passing yards.

Rookie running back, Sony Michel has rushed for 112 yards and 98 yards in the last two contests. This is the first time in decades that the Patriots have a legitimate 100-yard rusher in their backfield. Michel is questionable for Sunday’s game with a knee injury. Quarterback Tom Brady struggled in his first few games, he has 12 touchdowns but 6 interceptions.

New England is ranked 30th in sacks this season. In 5 games, they have only sacked opposing quarterbacks 7 times.

The Philadelphia Eagles exposed the Patriots lack of team speed on defense in last year’s Super Bowl. The Chiefs are the fastest offensive team in the NFL. But there is some good news for the Patriots.

Below is the record and stats for quarterbacks under 25 years old starting at Gillette Stadium.

  • Patrick Mahomes is 23-years-old.
  • 1-41 record.
  • Averaged 191 passing yards.
  • 43 touchdowns/46 interceptions.
  • QB rating 71.0.

The Patriots need to control the ball by rushing 35 to 40 times. Julian Eldelman should have 10-12 catches over the middle. They must keep the Chiefs high powered offensive attack off the field.

Patriots make a statement here and win 37-31.
