Cam Newton: The Right Fit For The New England Patriots

Cam Newton has agreed to a one-year contract with the New England Patriots. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, The Patriots are the first team in NFL history to both lose and add a former MVP in a single season. The deal is estimated to be worth $7.5 million with a ton of incentives. Newton won the MVP award in 2015 when he was leading the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl. That season he had 45 total touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. Since that time Cam has regressed.

2016: 19 passing touchdowns, 14 interceptions.

2017: 22 passing touchdowns, 16 interceptions.

2018: 24 passing touchdowns, 13 interceptions.

Newton has always struggled with his accuracy. He has a career completion percentage of 59.6.

Beatles legend Jon Lennon once said, “I’m an artist, and if you give me a tuba, I’ll bring you something out of it.

Bill Belichick is a coaching artist. He will get the most out of Cam Newton.

For the first time in New England, Belichick now has a mobile quarterback. Expect the Patriots to have a ton of roll out passes and Newton will have the ability to create on the field.

This is a low risk high reward signing for the 6-time Super Bowl Champions. If Cam has a great season, the Patriots made the right move. If he struggles early, they can play Brian Hoyer or Jarrett Stidham. Mid-way through the season they can make the switch at quarterback and start trading off pieces to acquire draft picks. If that happens, either Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, or Ohio State’s Justin Fields will be their starting quarterback in 2021.

As of right now, the Patriots have the best starting quarterback in their division. That is something they were used to for two decades with Tom Brady.
