The Battle of the AL Central

By: Chandler Ragsdale

The AL Central at the beginning of the season was thought out to be either the Kansas City Royals or the Detroit Tigers’ division for the taking. Most likely followed by maybe a very small chance for the Cleveland Indians or Chicago White Sox to surprise some people and compete for first, but nobody probably predicted the Minnesota Twins to be in first place right now nearly two months into the season.

Maybe it has something to do with Torii Hunter coming back to the team, or the fact that they’ve just figured out how to win. The Twins sit as one of three teams in the MLB to have 30 wins, as they sit atop of the AL Central with a half game lead over Kansas City. It may not be a big lead, but the fact that the Twins are in first place right now is just shocking. Especially considering what they’ve done these past couple of seasons.

They have a great club this year, and they definitely know how to win, because they own the best record in the AL as of right now. Although, if I were the Twins, I would not take any team in this division lightly. The defending AL Champion Royals are a dangerous team. The Tigers are on a skid right now, but they’ve shown us what they can do.

The Indians are starting to work it out after a dreadful start to the beginning of the season. Defending AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber is starting to return back to form, as he leads the MLB in strikeouts with 96, which is eight more than the pitcher behind him, James Shields.

The Chicago White Sox can also grab some wins when their hot. Starting pitcher John Danks went the distance today, shutting out the hot Houston Astros.

So the AL Central is up for grabs, but as for right now, the Minnesota Twins are in control. This division has been fun to watch this season, and hopefully it will stay that way.
