5 Things We Learned About Week 3 in College Football

It wasn’t a great week, schedule wise, for college football. Week 3 didn’t have a top 25 matchup. But, there were several upsets and developing stories.

5 Things we learned about week 3 in College Football.

5) Roll Tide:

#2 Alabama defeated South Carolina 47-23.
That is not the story, the story here is Nick Saban is now 17-0 against his former assistants. Not one of Saban’s former employees have ever beaten him in a college football game. Quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, had his 8th career game with 4 or more touchdown passes, that set an Alabama school record.

4) #19 Iowa wins at Iowa State:

Coming into this game, Iowa State had won 7 straight home games, that ended Saturday night. Iowa won for the 5th straight time against their in-state rivals. I don’t think Iowa will win ten games this year but they are a very good football team. The problem is… They still have to play at Michigan, at Wisconsin and at Nebraska.

3) USC and Maryland go down in flames:

Neither USC or Maryland had high expectations this year. The Trojans and Terrapins were not ranked in the pre-season top 25 polls. Both teams started 2-0 and were ranked 25 and 21 going into Saturday’s contest. USC lost on the road, in overtime, to BYU 30-27. Maryland lost on the road to unranked Temple, 20-17. This is the 5th straight time that MD has lost a game after they were ranked in the top 25.

2) Who is the front runner for the Heisman Trophy?

Justin Herbert (Oregon), became the first Duck’s quarterback to have back to back games with 5 touchdown passes.

Tua Tagovailoa continues to put up video game like numbers for Alabama.

Joe Burrow is completing 83% of his passes for LSU. He has 11 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts is 49 for 61 and has 12 total touchdowns in 3 games.

1) Herman Edwards has evolved as a coach.

Arizona state traveled to #18 Michigan State and won 10-7. When Herman Edwards was the Jets coach he was the most conservative offensive football coach in the NFL. After his upset Victory over the Spartans, Edwards said, “Its a nice win but we have to figure out a way to score.” After a decade of coaching, Edwards is finally evolving and realizing that you need offense to win games. This could be the best victory of his coaching career. Arizona State is a team on the rise.

Bonus Coverage:

#17 UCF dominated Stanford 45-27. This game was 38-7 at halftime. What more does UCF have to do to be ranked in the top 10? Over the past 28 games, they are 27-1.

Florida State gave up 21 points in the 4th quarter and lost to Virginia 31-24. Taggert has a career record of 53-39 and he is 6-9 at FSU, including a 3-6 conference record.

Clemson defeated Syracuse on the road 41-6. This team looks bored out of their minds. The only way this team loses a regular season game is if they get complacent.

#7 Notre Dame scored 66 points against New Mexico. They should have saved some of those points, they are going to need it when they travel to #3 Georgia on Saturday
