Each week, during the football season, The Sports Whisperer will write two articles.

  • Five things we learned about college football
  • Five things we learned about the NFL.

Even though the season hasn’t started yet, I have already learned 5 things about the NFL and College Football. So here is my 1st installment, a preview of whats to come.

One of my favorite movies growing up was Guy Ritche’s Snatch, co-starring Brad Pitt. Bullet Tooth Tony says in the movie, “You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.” This couldn’t be a more fitting phrase for what you will read below.

#5) There is a reason why the Detroit Lions have never played in a Super Bowl:

Matthew Stafford and the Lions agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $135 million on Monday. Stafford is now the highest paid player in the NFL, making $27 million per year. Just to put in perspective, Stafford is making $5 million per year more than Aaron Rodgers, $7 million more than Tom Brady and Matt Ryan. There are 7 quarterbacks, just off the top of my head that I would take over Stafford.

Brady, Rodgers, Ryan, Cam Newton Derek Carr, Marcus Mariota and Drew Brees.

Stafford is 0-3 in the playoffs with 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Stupid is as Stupid does. Detroit was stupid in hiring Jim Caldwell as their head coach and stupid for making their quarterback the highest paid player in the NFL.

#4) The Jets organization is either insane, stupid or incompetent:

The definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Since Joe Namath left the Jets in 1975, the team has not had a franchise quarterback, in their prime. On Monday, Jets head coach, Todd Bowles announced that 38-year-old Josh McCown will be the starting quarterback. When I heard this announcement, I quoted Tom Cruise from the 1988 movie Rain Man.

Could you repeat that, because I can’t believe my f’ing ears? ”

In 82 games, McCown is 18-42 as a starter. He has completed 59% of his passes and has 79 touchdowns and 69 interceptions. The Jets could have drafted National Championship winner Deshaun Watson out of Clemson. But, the powers that be, thought McCown was a much better option. “Gang Green” will have one of the worst offenses in the NFL and fans should boycott this team for 40 years of incompetence.

#3) The Packers offense is going to be downright scary:

In 2016, Aaron Rodgers completed 65% of his passes, threw for 4,428 yards, and 40 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions. He should have won the MVP, and as good as those stats were last year, they will be better in 2017.

24-year-old Ty Montgomery has gained 10 lbs. of muscle in the off-season. He is still learning the running back position but should be very productive. He will rush for over 1000 yards and catch 50 passes. Green Bay’s receiving core could be the best in the league. Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams and Tight End, Martellus Bennett should all catch over 55 balls. Rodgers could pass for over 5,000 yards and throw for 50 touchdowns.

#2) Colin Kaepernick is being black balled by the NFL Owners.

Kaepernick sat during the national anthem last year in a peaceful protest. One would think that he brutally beat up his girlfriend, got arrested for a DUI or got busted with illegal substances. If he did that, he would have a job right now. Kaepernick has raised and donated close to $2 million since last year and the Owners act like he shot somebody. Say it out loud… all he did was peacefully protest. It is a disgrace that he is being blackballed for speaking out against injustices. Muhammad Ali did this his whole career.

#1) The Tide will roll over Florida State.

Saturday Night, 8PM Eastern, #1 Alabama will face # 3 Florida State in Atlanta, Georgia. This game should be competitive. Combined, the two teams have about 20 NFL prospects on their rosters. But here is what you need to know. Alabama coach, Nick Saban, has been trying to get the taste out of last years’ National Championship loss (to Clemson 35-31) since January. He has reminded his team of that crushing defeat every day for 8 months. Saban is 10 -0 against his former assistants and he will out-coach Jimbo Fisher. To beat “Bama” you must play and coach a perfect game, FSU won’t do that. Since 1998, FSU is 1-6 vs number ranked opponents, make it 1-7, “Roll Tide” wins 41-30.

Bonus Coverage: Carson Wentz will become the best quarterback in the NFC East over the next 5 years.
