UCF Coach Scott Frost: As Cool As The Other Side Of The Pillow

Two years ago, the University of Central Florida, had a record of 0-12. It was a disastrous season for their football team. To the administrations credit, they went after Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, Scott Frost. The former Nebraska quarterback and New York Jets safety is signed to coach the Knights till the year 2021 at about 2 million per season.

On Saturday, (12-0) UCF defeated (9-2) South Florida 49-42, in front of a raucous home crowd. Frost became to the first coach in the history of college football to take a team that was 0-12 and go undefeated, 2 years later. The Knights lead the country in scoring, averaging 48.3 points per game.

Going 12-0 is an amazing accomplishment, but what has been so shocking is that UCF is doing this with relatively no experience. Frost spent two years (2013-15) as Oregon’s offensive coordinator before he became a head coach. He is in the infancy stages of his coaching career. The Knight’s quarterback McKenzie Milton is just a sophomore. Milton looks like he is 16 years old, he is only 5-10 and weighs about 185lbs. But don’t let his high school looks fool you, he is an assassin behind center. The Hawaiian native is amongst the nations leaders, completing 69.1% of his passes, he has 36 total touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. He has also thrown for over 3300 yards on the season. Watching Milton play is like watching a mini version of Marcus Mariota. He throws the ball well, runs the ball well and has a great football IQ. Coaches have raved about his competitiveness and ability to process what the coaching staff is trying to do on offense. If he was 6’3, he would be a house hold name.

There are only 2 undefeated teams in college football. The Wisconsin Badgers are 11-0 and UCF.

According to the new AP Pol,l Wisconsin is ranked #3 in the country and UCF is ranked #12.

This is an absolute disgrace, what more does Frost and his team have to do to be ranked in the top 10?

The job of the playoff committee is to make sure teams across the country get a legitimate chance to play in the Final Four Playoff.

Ohio State, Penn State, TCU, and USC all have two losses and they are ranked higher in the poll.

Wisconsin, Georgia, and Miami are all one dimensional with great defenses but very limited in the passing game. They are ranked ahead of UCF.

UCF doesn’t have an elite defense, but they are good situationally. They are lead by Shaquem Griffin who is one of the best defensive players in the conference. Griffin is a blur sideline to sideline and he does this all with one hand. He is truly an inspiration.

On Saturday, late in the first half, when the momentum seemed to be changing in favor for USF, Frost’s defense got a huge interception. When the score was tied 42-42, Frost’s special teams came up huge. With 1:28 left in the 4th quarter Mike Hughes returned a kickoff 95 yards to seal the win. All three units, helped contribute to the win.

I don’t think the Knights will be able to play for a national championship this year, but I haven’t seen a coach have this much success in such a short time since Chip Kelly arrived in Oregon.

Frost and his team should be a pre-season top 10 pick next year, and I am excited for their conference championship game and Bowl appearance. I would be utterly shocked if Wisconsin “runs the table” and wins the rest of their games. Which means, Frost has the opportunity in his second year as a head coach, to have the only college football team in 2017, to go undefeated.

He is a coach on the rise and the rest of the country and universities should take notice. To paraphrase legendary ESPN broadcaster, Stuart Scott…

“Scott Frost is as cool as the other side of the pillow.”
