The Tennessee Titans control the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. The Titans have been rumored in almost every mock draft to be taking DT Leonard Williams out of USC. The Titans hired former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau in to be an assistant coach over the defense earlier this offseason. Brian Orakpo signed with the Titans to give the Titans an outside pass rush, and I think that the smartest thing that the Titans could do is draft Williams to have a big defensive lineman who can rush the quarterback along with Orakpo because of what Lebeau has proven he can do with a pass rush. But are the Titans considering Oregon’s quarterback Marcus Mariota?
Ken Whisenhunt, Titans head coach, made a very interesting claim at the NFL owners meeting about Marcus Mariota. “But it’s hard to not be impressed with what he did in college … If he comes to us at No. 2, if we pick him at No. 2, then you definitely think he’s going to be the Day 1 starter.” Whisenhunt said about Marcus Mariota.
Whisenhunt has already said that Zach Mettenberger is their starting quarterback going into 2015, but with what Whisenhunt said, is he considering drafting Mariota with the No, 2 overall pick? I don’t think that Whisenhunt is going to draft Mariota, but I see what Whisenhunt is trying to do. He is trying to stir up attention that the Titans may be interested in Mariota, so a team will want to trade up to the No. 2 overall pick. The Titans would benefit greatly if a team were to trade up to the No. 2 pick because of the Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams trade that happened for RGIII. The Rams got numerous draft picks from Washington, and the Rams got a bulk of their starters out of this trade.
The Titans are trying to get a trade like this from a team like Cleveland, Philadelphia, or even San Diego. Whisenhunt has a very complicated NFL offense, and Mariota would need some time to transition from his Oregon offense to Whisenhunt’s offense. Whisenhunt is doing a very smart thing by trying to draw attention to himself and the Titans to try to get someone to trade up for Mariota. I think that it could possibly work, but I still don’t believe that the Titans will draft Mariota.
