Kawhi Leonard… The Quietest Star in the NBA

Growing up there was a reoccurring joke. “Who is the only coach who can stop Michael Jordan from scoring 20 points per game…. Dean Smith ( his former coach at North Carolina). The reason why this was said, is Coach Smith preached ball movement and team ball. Some of the same principles can be said for Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs. The System in San Antonio is bigger than any one player and it has been a total success. No player outshines the organization.

Spurs:

19 straight winning seasons.

19 straight seasons of holding opponents under 100 points per game.

19 straight seasons of .600 winning percentage.

19 straight playoff appearances

5 NBA Championships.
Most people think the Lakers are the best organization in sports but over the past 20 years it is not even close.

The Spurs are the New England Patriots of the NBA. To paraphrase former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, ‘They just win baby!”

The Spurs went from Tim Duncan and Tony Parker being the focal points on offense to Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge. No disrespect to Aldridge but this is now Leonard’s team. Kawhi is averaging 21 PPG, 6.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and he is shooting 46% from three. No disrespect to LeBron James but Leonard is now the best two way player night in and night out.

Last season Kawhi joined an elite company.. He is one of only three players ( Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon) to win Defensive Player of the Year and be named the finals MVP.

The only negative in Kawhi’s game is sometimes he is still reluctant to take over the game. He has so much respect for his teammates and the system, he doesn’t dominate it. He is a lot like Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans, he is a fierce competitor but not flashy, not outspoken and very humble and respectful. If Leonard was on any other team in the NBA he would average 25-30 points per game.

Everyone is talking about the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers meeting in the NBA Finals and rightly so, both teams are having great years .But, if Leonard gets more aggressive he can carry them to the Championship. He is the quietest superstar that no one knows about. My guess is… he prefers it that way. It is the culture of the Spurs…  Just Win Baby!
