As I’m sure you all have heard, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Buffalo Bills have agreed on a player-for-player trade. The Eagles will be sending Pro-Bowl running back Lesean McCoy to Buffalo in return for Defensive Rookie of the Year runner-up from 2013 Kiko Alonso. Alonso is a product of Chip Kelly from Oregon. Alonso is a monster on the defensive side of the ball, and he can play the pass and stop the run. He can help the Eagles make their linebacking core one of the best in the league, but will Kelly keep Alonso in Philadelphia?
There have been multiple rumors that Philadelphia wants to move up to try to draft Oregon QB Marcus Mariota. Of course Chip Kelly would want the QB he recruited to come to Philadelphia to run that spread offense. Mariota has become a strong armed, quick legged quarterback. The talks around the league were that the Eagles would trade McCoy to one of the top teams to get Mariota, but now that McCoy is in Buffalo, how will the Eagles land Mariota? I think that the Eagles may move Alonso to either Tampa or Tennessee because both teams need defensive help, and Alonso would fit in perfectly. It would be a long shot, but i think that the Eagles are going to end up finding a way to draft Mariota because he is the perfect fit for Kelly’s offense.
Another way for the Eagles to land Mariota would be to trade numerous draft picks to either the Jets or the Titans. The Eagles could also make a move with the Jets to send Nick Foles and a few draft picks in exchange for the 6th pick in this draft. I think that this move here is a much more logical and probable move than trading away Kiko Alonso because Alonso would help solidify the Eagles front 7. However, the Eagles could just get lucky and Mariota could fall past the Jets at 6th and potentially could fall out of the top 10.
Lesean McCoy is one of the top running backs in the NFL, and Philadelphia will have a huge void to fill in the backfield. However, there are numerous running backs that could potentially attempt to fill the void left by McCoy. Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller is becoming a free agent, and since Buffalo got McCoy, they obviously don’t need Spiller. Spiller is elusive and a power back who can move defenders out of the way. He would be a fantastic fit in Philadelphia because of how he plays. Another name that could end up in Philadelphia is Mark Ingram of the New Orleans Saints. Ingram is a monster back who can also plow over the defenders, but is not as elusive as Spiller. The running back that is the farthest fetched idea is Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Philadelphia would have to give up a whole lot for Peterson. It would be a scary Kelly offense with the speed that they run their offense at and the aggressive, beast running of Peterson.
Everyone is freaking out that the Eagles traded away McCoy, but everyone needs to just wait a while and watch the magic that Chip Kelly will work.
