The Triangle of Insanity… James Dolan, Phil Jackson and Carmelo Anthony

The Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
The New York Knicks lost to the Portland Trailblazers Tuesday night by the score of 104-85 at Madison Square Garden. After starting the season 22-22 the Knicks are now 25-37. With time running down in the 4th quarter a heckler told Carmelo Anthony that the team sucked. Melo responded by pointing to owner James Dolan and said, “Ask him for a refund”

Once again the Knicks are the text book definition of dysfunctional. Kurt Rambis is the interm coach. Instead of playing younger guys, he is worried about winning games because he wants to be the head coach. They aren’t going to make the playoffs and they don’t have a first round draft pick. There is absolutely no reason not to play the younger players and develop them for next year.

Anthony may be a lot of things but he is clearly not a leader of men. The Trailblazers lost 4 starters last year and decided to build their team around PG,Damian Lillard. Portland is 33-28 and is in the 7th place in the brutal Western Conference. If it wasn’t for Stephen Curry, Lillard would be everyone’s choice for MVP. Watching the Knicks play is like watching a men’s league basketball game. They have no fight in them, no desire and they play defense sporadically.

Phil Jackson keeps wanting his team to run the triangle offense but it simply does not work. The triangle is built on ball movement, cutting and trust. The Knicks are 26th in the league in assists, almost everything is isolation. When your best player (Melo) dominates the ball it is almost impossible to run this style of offense.

Recently former Knick,Amar’e Stoudemire said, ““If Jeremy Lin stayed, it would’ve been cool. But everyone wasn’t a fan of him being a new star. So he didn’t stay long. Jeremy was a great, great guy, great with teammates, worked hard. He put the work in. We were proud of him having his moment. A lot of times you got to enjoy somebody else’s success. That wasn’t the case for us during that stretch. You got to enjoy that and let that player enjoy himself and cherish those moments. He was becoming a star and I didn’t think everyone was pleased with that.” Stoudemire is implying that Melo couldn’t share the spotlight. I am starting to believe that this is true. Anthony could have left New York last year and go to a contending team. He decided to stay and the Knicks gave him a max contract. I think Melo would rather scored 25 and lose than share the spotlight, score 17 and win. There is a reason why he has been to one conference finals in his playing career… He is selfish.

If I am James Dolan I trade Melo and I fire Phil. Jackson hasn’t put a winning team together and more importantly he brought pieces in that can’t run the triangle offense. The job of a coach and general manager is to put the team in the best position to win. Jackson is like former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, neither has evolved and both only know one system and one style.

The Knicks are still 3 years away from being a legitimate playoff team. I would hire Tom Thibodeau immediately.

Its the same old Knicks since 2000. No playoffs, no draft picks and players that don’t fit a broken system. They are the definition in insanity.
