5 Things We Learned About Week 10 In College Football

In the 2006 movie, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Ricky’s dad says, “Remember son, if you ain’t first you are last.” Let’s change that for this week’s theme in college football. If you ain’t in the top 4. you are last. Unless you are a fan of the school playin, Bowl games, other than the top 4 playoffs have become irrelevant. College Football should have a playoff format like Division IA, II and III. Pick 16 teams, four from each region in a round robin tournament, until we get to the National Championship game.

Here are 5 Things we learned about week 10 in College Football.

#5) I never “bought into” #7 Penn State.

The #7 Nittany Lions lost to #24 Michigan State, 27-24 on a game winning field goal with zero time remaining. In ten weeks of writing college football articles, I had Penn State ranked in the top 5 once. This is a good, not great team. They will finish in the top 15 and that is what they deserve. They have now lost two games in a row and Heisman hopeful, Saquon Barkely, rushed 14 times for 63 yards. The running back will be invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony, but he won’t win it.  This game was delayed due to inclement weather and took over 7 hours to play.

#4) #6 Ohio State goes down in flames.

In one of his worst losses as a head coach, Urban Meyer and Ohio State, got thoroughly embarrassed on Saturday, losing to Iowa 55-24. Iowa’s quarterback, Nate Stanley threw for 5 touchdown passes. The Buckeye’s now have 2 loses on the season. Earlier in the week, Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd said that Ohio State would play Alabama in the National Championship game and blow the crimson tide out. “Swing and a miss” for the Herd. The headline below say it all

#3) #3 Notre Dame will face #10 Miami on the road next week:

In the late 1980s, Notre Dame vs. Miami football game, was colloquially known as Catholics vs. Convicts. It was played on October 15, 1988. The two teams were undefeated when they played each other at Notre Dame Stadium. ND won the closely contested game 31–30. The Fighting Irish defeated Wake Forest on Saturday 48-37 and Miami manhandled Virginia Tech 28-10. This was the Hurricanes biggest test of the season and they made it look easy. Miami’s coach, Mark Richt, has a reputation as being a great recruiter. When he coached at  Georgia, he could never get his team “over the hump” in big games. The winner of this contest will most likely have a first-class ticket to the Final Four playoffs. It will be must watch television. College Game Day will be in Miami for the first time in over a decade.

#2) Georgia’s ranking of #1 is overrated.

The Georgia Bulldogs, led by 1st year coach Kirby Smart, are a very good team. I am not trying to disrespect them in anyway shape or form, but they are not the best team in the country. Smart’s team is 7-0 but they are one dimensional. Georgia ranks second in the SEC in rushing the football (284 Yards per game) but they are last in passing yards (162 Yards per game.) If they play Alabama in the SEC championship, Nick Saban will exploit their passing game and put 9 men in the box. Georgia will not make it to the Final Four playoffs.

#1) Did Baker Mayfield win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday?

#5 Oklahoma defeated #11 Oklahoma State on the road, 62-52. OU quarterback, Baker Mayfield threw for 5 touchdown passes and 598 yards. This was a great performance in arguably his biggest game. Oklahoma is now 8-1 and will face #8 TCU at home next weekend. If the Sooners can win that game they should make the final four and Mayfield should win the Heisman.

Bonus Coverage:

#9 Wisconsin is undefeated (9-0) and no one is taking them seriously…. Why?

#18 UCF is now 8-0 after defeating SMU 31-24. Coming into this game, Scott Frost and his Knights won every game by double digits. This team could go undefeated but will never get an invite to the Final Four.

#2 Alabama beat LSU 24-10.  The Tide have won 7 straight games against LSU.

The Sports Whisperer’s Top 5.

#5 Georgia

#4 Notre Dame

#3 Clemson

#2 Oklahoma

#1 Alabama
