#3 Georgia vs. #4 Alabama… National Championship Preview/Prediction

Over the past 24 months, I have written over 500 articles. The re-occurring theme over the past two years… The Sports Whisperer is a New England Patriots and Alabama Football “HATER”. This is the furthest thing from the truth. I have written numerous times that Bill Belichick is the greatest NFL Coach of all-time and Nick Saban is the greatest college coach of all-time. Both coaches have built dynasty’s that will never be duplicated. The Patriots have won 5 Super Bowls, 15 AFC East Championships and Saban has won 5 National Titles (1 as the head coach of LSU).

College Football Playoff national championship game: No. 3 Georgia (13-1) vs. No. 4 Alabama (12-1) at Atlanta, Monday, 8 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Alabama on Offense:

QB, Jalen Hurts has led Bama to back to back National Championship games as a freshman and sophomore. That is very impressive. He had 25 total touchdowns on the year and only 1 interception. He doesn’t make mistakes and just when you think you have him contained he will scamper for a big 10-yard run. He had over 800 rushing yards this season. Running back Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough rushed for over 1,500 yards and had 19 touchdowns. Harris is averaging almost 8 yards per carry. WR, Calvin Ridley had over 900 receiving yards and averages almost 16 yards per catch. This is not a team that will beat you throwing the ball consistently but they wear defenses down over 4 quarters.

Alabama on Defense:

Over the past 8 weeks the crimson tide allowed 3, 19,9,7,10,24,0,26 and 6 points. This is a defense that has gotten better as the season goes on. The held Clemson (The Number 1 team in the country coming into the playoffs) to just 188 total yards. I expect this defense to force a few turnovers in the championship game. They may not be the greatest Alabama defense of all-time, but they make big plays and big stops when they need to. Alabama is No. 1 in the country in yards per play allowed (3.92).

Georgia on Offense:

All you need to know about Georgia’s offense is two names… Sony Michel and Nick Chubb

Chubb and Michel have combined for 8,259 yards rushing, more than any FBS running back duo and surpassing SMU stars Craig James and Eric Dickerson, who ran for 8,192 yards. Michel carried the ball 11 times for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns and Chub had 14 carries for 145 and 2 touchdowns against Oklahoma. Quarterback Jake Fromm was very effective as well. He was 20-29, 210 yards, 2 touchdowns and ZERO interceptions. This team lives and dies by the run and their duo may not just be the best in college football, but they would be just as good as the New Orleans saints duo of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara.

Georgia on Defense:

I was absolutely shocked how bad the Bulldogs looked in the 1st half against Oklahoma. They let up 31 points by halftime, but to Kirby Smart’s credit he made tremendous adjustments. They only gave up 17 points in the 2nd half and two overtimes. This is a defense that has great speed sideline to sideline and should play much better against Alabama. Going into the Oklahoma game Georgia was allowing less than 14 points per game.

Prediction:

Everything in my mind tells me to take Georgia and their brutal rushing attack. But, Nick Saban is 11-0 against his former assistants. People have overlooked Alabama all year long and that is what Saban thrives on. I wouldn’t be shocked if Georgia Wins but how can you go against the GOAT (Greatest of All-Time) in Saban. Last year, I wrote in pre-season, Clemson will face Bama the title game and the Tigers would win. I was lucky that happened. I don’t see Saban lose back-to-back national championship games.

Take Alabama here 24-20.
